South Africa needs change – what can you do?

Even if you have not been following the news in these last few weeks, you will definitely agree that our beloved South Africa desperately needs change. Crime, racism, corruption are but a few things we can mention that are currently destroying the country we love. The circle is drawing closer and closer and us and the people we love, our friends, our families are being affected by it.

A famous quote reads that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” ~ Edmund Burke
Something needs to be done.  And it is the responsibility of each of us to be that good person who does something.

So what do we do??

In times like these it can be tempting to fight the world with the world’s weapons and in the world’s way. But I am deeply challenged by the Bible. If we are to be people who live by the Word, we need to remember what God says about the matter:

  • We are in the world, but not of it ~ John 17:14-17
  • The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. ~ 2 Cor 10:4-5
  • Our fight it not against people, but against spiritual forces of evil ~ Eph 6:12-18

Eph 6 further instructs us to put on our spiritual armour “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” ~Eph 6:18

Prayer is our most powerful weapon. After all, would you want to fight your battle alone, or do you want the Almighty, All-Powerful, Living God to step in and change things. God wants to step in. He desires to change South Africa. But He has asked us to pray. Not because His hands are tied, but because He has chosen to work on this earth WITH us. He has called us friends, co-labourers, children. And this is His way; He wants to work together with us and shake this nation like you cannot even imagine right now (Eph 3:20)

The Bible has given us guidelines in how to pray for change:

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” ~1 Tim 2:1-2 *Pray for the government and those in authority with all kinds of prayers.

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” ~ Rom 13:1    “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.” ~ 1 Pet 2:17 *Do this in submission, honour and respect to those who God has placed in leadership.

“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” ~ Jer 29:7  * Bless your city, bless this country, pray for peace and prosperity.

“If My people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” ~2 Chron 7:14 *Humble yourself, Seek God’s face, Repent of your own sins and align yourself again with Him to make Him #1.

This is a time for prayer. Pray by yourself, with your family. Get friends together or call your church to pray corporately. When we as a church in South Africa will bow down and humble ourselves, God will be true to His Word and move in our land. Trust Him. He is who He says He is and He will do what He said He will do.
Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” -Matthew 18:20
