Since the roller coaster of Covid and lockdown began 4 months ago, I felt many fears that I have been unaware of, starting to surface. Like when you shake a coke bottle and all the bubbles start to rise to the top. They form themselves into “What ifs” in my mind. And dwelling on these “what ifs” become overwhelming and paralysing. I am sure, that like me, you also might need some extra courage to face the world in these extraordinary times we are living in. So, I want to share with you 3 things that I have learned about being courageous.

1. Do it afraid

It’s always interesting to me that when God spoke to Joshua in this famous verse, that He actually issued a command: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 . He did not say “Hey Joshua, just ask me and tonight in your sleep, I will give you all the courage you need.” He issued a command and expected Joshua to obey!

God is kind and fair. He will never ask us to do something we are unable to do. But He very well might ask us to do things which feel too big for us! The answer: Do it afraid! Joyce Meyer coined this phrase in one of her teachings, and it has stuck with throughout the years. When God asks us to do something, we can not wait for a moment where the emotion or thoughts of fear has gone. Just do it. Do it afraid. That IS Courage.

    2. The Key to this

The second part of Joshua 1v9 is key: “for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go“. Knowing that God is with us, will shift the perspective from “me facing my fear” to “God and me, together facing my fear.” Think of that scene in “Prince Caspian” (watch it here) where Lucy walks over the bridge with her little knife and faces the huge enemy army, and then Aslan walks up besides her and roars!

We need to spend time in God’s presence, and in His Word and let Him renew our thinking. When we do, we will start becoming more aware of God with us, than the enemy facing us.

    3. Courage encourages

We all love the stories and movies of great heroes and ordinary people alike who face and overcome their fears. We walk away inspired and encouraged. But I have realized that God wants to use my story as well. Every fear I face, every obstacle I overcome with God’s help and power becomes a testimony and a story that encourages those around me to take the same step of faith.

God wants to use your story as well. What is that one thing that God is asking of you that feels too big for you at the moment? You can do it! He is with you, and will help and strengthen you. Come on.

Just do it. Do it afraid!
